... as the name of this post states, I'm pretty sure the Navy's unofficial motto is "Semper Gumby" (Always Flexible). In keeping with this idea, I found out today that plans for moving will be a little bit sped up from what I originally planned.
Instead of moving to Mayport at the end of June to meet the ship sometime in July, I'm actually going to detach from the Unit here in Charlottesville on 18 JUN and drive 10 hours all day to get to Mayport. From there, I'll spend 3 days setting up my apartment, unpacking, establishing residency, etc and then report aboard the USS Samuel B Roberts on Friday 22 JUN. I'll spend that weekend moving my belongings onto the ship before we get underway for awhile!
Keep checking back here for updates as I move and figure out my mailing/e-mail address onboard the SBR. Emails/letters/care packages are all greatly appreciated! Hopefully I'll be able to update the blog enough to keep you all at least mildly entertained at the adventures of Molly as a real officer on deployment. I'm not making any promises, but I'm sure I'll have my fair share of sea stories racked up in no time at all.
Unfortunately the ship's website is down (which may be indicative of how often I'll get email access...) but click here if you want to learn more about the Sammy B. Thanks for reading this far and happy sailing!

Hi, Molly, and good luck on your tour aboard the Sammy B. You may want to grab a copy of my book about the ship before you report aboard: No Higher Honor: Saving the USS Samuel B. Roberts in the Persian Gulf (Naval Institute Press, 2006).
